REV. ELWICK DIES OF COLLISION INJURIES

Retired Minister Was on His W»y to Fayette Sunday to Serve As Supply Preacher Rev. Thomas J. Elwick, Decorah, retired Methodist minister, suffered Injuries, including skull fracture, Sunday morning while on his way to Fayette, where he was to preach in the Methodist church. The car in which he was riding collided with another about two and a half miles south of West Union. He was taken to the West Union hospital, where he remained unconscious until his death Monday. He was about 77 years of age. A. W. Hausladen of West Union was reported to be the driver of the other car, and escaped with bruises. Flying snow and icy condition were believed to have caused the accident. Both cars were damaged considerably. The congregation at the Methodist church here had assembled and was awaiting the arrival of Rev. Elwick, who was to preach, Rev. Marion L. Sunderlin having been appointed to the pastorate at Anamosa, and no minister having yet been named to the Fayette charge. Rev. Elwick did not arrive, and a service was held without the sermon. Supt. Harold D. Matt, of the committee to secure a preacher, endeavoured after the service to discover the whereabout of the Decorah minister and telephoned the sheriff at West Union, learning then of the accident and that Rev. Elwick was in the hospital there. Member of U. I. U. Class of 1894 Rev. Thomas J. Elwick received his A. B. degree from Upper Iowa University in 1894, his A. M. in 1908, and D. D. in 1922. He was one of Upper Iowa's most loyal alumni, and was a frequent visitor at the college on Commencement and other occasions. His last visit here was at Homecoming time in October. As Methodist pastor he served Melbourne, East Janesville Circuit, Plainfield, Rudd, Volga City, Masonvtlle, Hazleton., Jesup, Shell Rock, Conrad, Strawberry Point. He retired from active labor in the ministry in 1934, but served Elberon as supply pastor in 1934-37. He was treasurer of the Upper Iowa Conference, 1915-19, and was president of the Conference Board of Stewards, 1931-34. He was married to Cecilia Valder in 1895. Three children were born to them: Ralph Valder (deceased), John Harold of the U. I. U. class of 1924 (deceased), and Velma, U. I. U. class of 1922, who is the wife of Supt. Sylvan W.
