Barbara was born March 25, 1932, in Memphis, Tennessee, to George and Bessie Mae (McNiel) Elwick. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1950. She later graduated from Wichita State University. Barbara married Norman E. Smyer on October 12, 1950, in Arkansas City. Barbara owned and operated Smyer Travel Service for 47 years before retiring in 2005. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the American Society of Travel Agencies, Soroptimist, and the Arkansas City and Winfield Chamber of Commerce. Barbara traveled the world with friends and family, making new friends everywhere she went.
Survivors include her son Gregory and wife Edna Smyer of Arkansas City, Jeff and wife Debbie Smyer of Clearwater, Florida; grandchildren Richard Smyer, Tye Smyer and Mary Nicole Oden; great-grandchildren Brody and Hadley Smyer, and Aidan and Gabrielle Ludwig.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman in 1972, and a sister Georgemae Crampton.
A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s and Similar Diseases Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
